The Oneida County, New York Genealogical and Historical Resource Site is a good starting point for local genealogy information on the Internet. Go to www.rootsweb.com/~nyoneida.

To request copies of vital records, such as birth, death, and marriage records from Rome, go to the City of Rome Office of Vital Statistics’ web site at www.romenewyork.com/vital_stats.html.

To locate obituary information from the local newspaper, the Rome Daily Sentinel, go to www.rootsweb.com/~nyoneida/obits/sentinel.html. Note: this site does not include full obituaries. One still has to use the newspaper microfilm or request photocopies to obtain the full obituary.

Please note that due to the large number of requests we receive, you may not have a response from us for several months. We appreciate your patience.

LIMITED RESEARCH REQUESTS:

Limited research includes requests for photocopies from the local newspapers for obituaries, birth, or marriage notices for specific dates as provided by the requestor; and basic searches for specific names in city directories and the indexes of city and county histories, census records, and other appropriate materials as determined by the local history librarian.

For out-of-state requests:

Due to the volume of out-of-state requests for assistance, we are obliged to charge a research fee of $25.00 payable in advance, plus $1.00 for copying services for up to four copies. Please remit a check for $26.00 payable to Jervis Public Library, 613 North Washington Street, Rome, New York 13440-4296. If the search is unsuccessful and there are no copies to be made, your $1.00 will be returned. If more than four copies are made, an additional charge of 25 cents per copy will be billed. Please indicate if there is a maximum amount that you wish to spend if more than four copies are made.

For out-of-county requests:

Due to the volume of out-of-county requests for assistance, we are obliged to charge a research fee of $15.00 payable in advance, plus $1.00 for copying services for up to four copies. Please remit a check for $16.00 payable to Jervis Public Library, 613 North Washington Street, Rome, New York 13440-4296. If the search is unsuccessful and there are no copies to be made, your $1.00 will be returned. If more than four copies are made, an additional charge of 25 cents per copy will be billed. Please indicate if there is a maximum amount that you wish to spend if more than four copies are made.

Extensive research includes broad requests for "any information about my family."

Jervis Library cannot undertake extensive research requests. We have a limited staff and its time must be devoted to patrons in our immediate area. For assistance, we suggest you contact one of the following local genealogists who will do research for a fee:
